For
the Past year, PEPP has been trying to understand what is wrong with the
crime free housing programs in the area. We want neighborhoods to
be safe and crime free, however we have encountered many families who have
become victims of crime-free policies and are being denied a place to live.
Most have not committed crimes or have any convictions on their records.
Yet they have been denied housing because of their "so-called criminal
back-ground".
What we have found out is that area police departments release information that misleads landlords about prospective tenants and incriminates them, regardless if they have committed any crimes. On April 26th, 2000 PEPP Members held a press conference in Moorhead Minnesota. The purpose of the event was to educate the community on these practices being implemented by Fargo, West Fargo, Moorhead and Dilworth. There was a moderate Audience, the press and members of several area police departments. A pannel of community representatives gave an hour long presentation on this issue. We have been meeting weekly since and have made much progress on this issue. It is our goal to follow up on the
interest this press conference generated. Members will continue to
meet until the policies change and quit punishing innocent families
