The Affordable Housing Tour of 2001--A
Work in Progress?
There
is much to discuss concerning Affordable Housing in Moorhead. In
2001
we lost a lot of Housing that is affordable. There are some
recent
efforts to deal with gaps in affordable housing, however we are a long
way from providing a quality of life that is accessible to all income
levels in Moorhead.
We are all in this together as this is our community.
Moorhead has seen a housing “boom” for those with moderate to high
incomes. This is to be commended, but there are still gaps that must be
addressed in order for Moorhead to be a “great place to live” for all
ages and income levels.
Uniting For Equality Housing Subgroup has defined these gaps into four
priority areas: workforce housing, supportive housing, accessible
housing, and family housing. Please note that this is to include home
ownership options within all four gap areas. It is important to move
affordable housing along as a large issue in order for a greater impact
to take place. This can be done by seeking out the partnerships and
collaborations that will make it happen.
We are working on developing a Community Based Housing Team to provide
leadership in the development of Affordable Housing in Moorhead and our
region.
Goal = There should be adequate
housing for all people and all incomes in the Moorhead community, that
there are gaps in this community, and that we are addressing these gaps.
We are spending two months
visiting with people and organizations in the community and ask the
following asking four simple questions.
1. What would it take to build affordable housing in Moorhead?
2. What are you doing to address this issue and what can you contribute?
3. What additional information do you need?
4. Would you be willing to talk with others to share your ideas?
We will be convening a group by the 1st week of June to develop a
strategy and move the political will of the community to focus on
Affordable housing in Moorhead.
Meanwhile, there are some Affordable
Housing
replacement units being
built in Moorhead, however these units represent Public Housing
units
being lost to private developers and are replacing housing taken off
the market.
We have lost many units since 2001. Take the affordable Housing
Tour
and reflect on how many affordable units have been lost in Moorhead
during the past 5 years.
